Lesson 10 — Dynamic Quickbase Schema Creation

Build new Quickbase schema from JavaScript and observe what Quickbase creates automatically when relationships are added.

Target Schema

The existing People table remains the center of the lesson. We will add Departments and Tasks, then connect them to People.

Departments Department Name
Location
Departments → People relationship
People Existing training table
People → Tasks relationship
Tasks Task Name
Due Date
Status

Important Quickbase Behavior

Not every field in the finished schema will be created by our field-creation requests.

When we create a Quickbase relationship, Quickbase can create the relationship reference field and requested lookup fields for us. Those fields must be identified separately from the fields our code explicitly creates.

Our code creates:
  Department Name
  Location

Quickbase relationship creation can create:
  Related Department
  Department Name lookup
  Department Location lookup

Lesson Workspace

This page checks the current Quickbase schema before each step. Completed work is detected automatically, and only the next valid schema action is enabled.

Schema Construction Steps

Complete the steps in order. A disabled step is either already complete or is waiting for a prerequisite from an earlier step.

1
Create Departments Table Create the first new table and capture its Table DBID.
2
Create Department Fields Create Department Name and Location, then capture their Field IDs.
3
Create Departments → People Relationship Create the relationship and observe the reference and lookup fields Quickbase creates automatically.
4
Create Tasks Table Create the second new table and capture its Table DBID.
5
Create Task Fields Create Task Name, Due Date, and Status, then capture their Field IDs.
6
Create People → Tasks Relationship Complete the schema and observe the relationship fields Quickbase creates in Tasks.
Re-read the current Quickbase schema and rebuild the lesson state.
Ready.

Lesson 9's Schema Explorer will be used later to verify the resulting tables, fields, and relationships.
